How To Split Test
Split Testing is honestly what separates the big boys of internet marketing with the beginners. The guys that make a lot of money simply know how to split test properly to make more and more sales while others are left spitting dust and wondering how they got so good.
Split Testing at its simplest level is simply testing 2 different variables on your sales page to determine which gets the most sales. By variable I mean any aspect of your sales page such as the color of your headline, the wording of your headline, the images you use on the page, the price of your offer, the text in each body paragraph etc.
Oftentimes I’m very pedantic and will go as far as testing the spacing at the top of the sales letter and the bolding and underlining of individual words on the sales page! In the past this would have been impossible but with some of the software you’ll see soon it can be set up to be done automatically
So how do you split test?
We’ll the simplest way is to split test the entire sales page at once (commonly known as an a b split test), although this isn’t as efficient as testing individual variables it is simple and free to set up. To set up a free a b split test you can simply download the free software at http://www.freesplittest.com.
From there you simply need to set up as many variations of a page as you like. For example you could have 4 basic variations:
- Your Default Sales Page
- Default Sales page with a new headline
- Default sales page with a different price
- Default sales page with a different background color
Try to only change one variable on each variation of the page otherwise you won’t really know what’s making more sales and what’s not.
From there you can send your traffic evenly to each variation and see which gets more sales.
That’s basic way of split testing and is fine when you don’t have much money to spend. However by spending mere pennies you can get fantastic software that will pretty much automate all your testing for you and you’ll be able to test as many different page combinations as you like (I run this software on my own site and have over 3000 different variations of my sales page being tested). The great thing is you don’t even need to know how to split test, it takes care of all the details for you.
This software is commonly known as multivariate testing software, and instead of having different versions of a page, you can specify different versions of each variable and have the software figure out exactly what combination of headline, colors, paragraphs and prices get the most sales and automatically adjust your sales page to constantly show the very best variation.
There are 3 major competitors in the multivariate split testing software market; there is the Split Test Accelerator, which costs $891, Kaizen Track which costs $197, and the Conversion Chicken which is free for a basic account. What’s the difference between these? Glad you asked.
At the core they all do exactly the same thing: test multiple variables against each other to figure out the very best sales page for you. The difference is in the interface and statistics they show you.
Why is the Conversion Chicken so cheap? Honestly I don’t know, it should probably be priced at around the same price as Kaizen Track. The main reason I believe is simply that the Split Test Accelerator and Kaizen Track are targeted towards programmers who can mess around with config files and really configure the program to do whatever they like while the Conversion Chicken just does great split testing and is simple and easy to use straight out of the box. Although it is less customizable from what I’ve seen it gives much clearer stats and graphs and is much much easier to get up and running.
They all work pretty much the same at the fundamental level and all give you exactly the same results when split testing, it just depends on whether you want to spend the additional money on more pretty graphs to display the same information.
I’d suggest if you are just starting out grab the Conversion Chicken and work with that until it has paid back your investment many times over (it has for me!) Then with all that additional money you’ve made from so many more sales you might want to hire a programmer to use the Split Test Accelerator or Kaizen Track.
That’s all I have on how to split test. If you have any questions or comments feel free to contact me using the contact form on this site

Top Secret Copywriting Techniques To Increase Your Sales By Over 214% In Under 24 Hours!
After 16 years in direct marketing, including 10 years online, I can tell you split testing is the single most important factor in the success of any direct response campaign.
Marketing instinct, experience and intuition can only get you so far. The various factors that make people respond to one thing over another aren’t as well known as the gurus would have you believe. Every product or service is unique, and split testing is the only factor that delivers consistent results. I fully endorse the conclusions outlined above.
